This photograph of the dam end of Haweswater is a reminder that although there was an original Haweswater it was nothing like what we see today. Deep underneath the present day reservoir lie the remains of Mardale village.
Almost forty years ago, following an exceptionally dry summer the reservoir dried up to such an extent that the remains of the old village were clearly visible. It was in the days of film cameras. I took shot after shot … only to discover on arriving home that I’d forgotten to put a film in the camera!
